[GovTech] Kentucky lawmakers strengthen data breach reporting laws

In the wake of the 2013 Target data breach, Target was criticized for not reporting the breach immediately to officials and its customers. To prevent this reluctance, Kentucky passed two bills (House Bill 5 and House Bill 232) that outline how targeted parties will be notified in the case of a data breach. The bills require public and private institutions that experience a data breach to alert the State Police, the auditor of public accounts, attorney general, Kentucky Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Education. The bills went through state congress rather quickly.
